The Housing Executive has begun renovation work on a set of East Belfast flats that have been earmarked for demolition.
Residents of the Tullycarnet flats were told at the end of last year that their homes were going to be demolished following years of campaigning to have them refurbished.
They had been told that a full renovation of their properties would be taking place a few years ago, but the NIHE had been unable to get a contractor to carry out the works.
At the end of last year, its board decided that the flats would be demolished in the coming years, however it also committed to carrying out some renovation works until then to make the area better for those living there.
Residents had complained that the conditions of the flats had made their lives "hell", due to the crumbling stair cases, mould and lack of security due to broken doors.
One resident even said that a tree had started growing in their chimney.
East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson has said that he is "delighted" to see that the works have begun to take place and hopes they will take place swiftly in the coming weeks and months.
He said: "Delighted to see the renovation of the Kings Road flats.
"This block in the Granton Park end has had:
- Panels replaced
- New flooring fitted
- Fitting of motion sensored lights in the communal areas
- Flaky paint stripped and a fresh coat throughout
- Concrete repairs
"Residents have been incredibly patient while waiting for a final decision on the future of the flats. Along with Joanne Bunting MLA, I have continually raised the need for an overhaul of the maintenance issues that have existed in the communal areas.
"Residents have taken great pride in their homes and it is only fitting that NIHE do their part in the upkeep of the communal areas.
"In August, the Chief Executive of NIHE committed to residents that she would do what is necessary to improve the flats in the interim period. I'm pleased that she has prioritised Kings Road and that work will move swiftly across all the blocks over the next few weeks and months."
