Tulane hired Troy’s Jon Sumrall to be their next head coach on Friday, the school announced. The two sides agreed on a six-year deal, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
“This is a landmark day for Tulane Football,” director of athletics David Harris said in a statement. “Jon’s passion for the game is unmatched, and I really felt that in meeting him. The Green Wave will be in good hands under his leadership, and we’re excited that he and Ginny have elected to make their family part of ours here at Tulane.”

Sumrall spent the past two seasons as Troy’s head coach, totaling a 23–4 record and winning back-to-back Sun Belt championships. He was previously the co-defensive coordinator at Kentucky and spent years as an assistant coach at a variety of schools, including both Troy and Tulane. From 2012 to ’14, Sumrall was with the Green Wave as a co-defensive coordinator, but he left to take a promotion at Troy for three seasons.
The Trojans made an attempt to keep Sumrall. Thamel also reported the school offered him a five-year contract worth $1.4 million per year to stay.
The Green Wave, meanwhile, are also coming off two successful seasons. They went 23–4 over the last two seasons under former head coach Willie Fritz, who led the team for eight years. Fritz left Tulane earlier this month to become the new head coach at Houston.
