TUI urges passengers to bring their own food and drink on flights after shortage

TUI has urged passengers to bring their own food and drinks on flights after struggling with staff shortages.

The airline announced there would be no hot or cold meals or sandwiches on short or mid-haul flights over the coming days due to issues with its catering supplier.

In a statement on TUI's website, the holiday company suggested customers bring their own food and soft drinks onboard.

However, TUI warned that passengers are not allowed to bring any alcohol onboard flights.

It comes after TUI informed travellers that a number of non-EU countries require having at least six months of validity on their passports on the date of arrival.

The airline and travel company emailed customers with a holiday booked this year ahead of the busy summer season.

TUI stated on its website : "We can confirm that unfortunately due to staff shortages with our catering supplier, there will be no hot and cold meals or sandwiches, and a limited offering of snacks and drinks, available onboard TUI Airways short- and mid-haul flights over the coming days.

"Customers may therefore want to bring their own food and soft drinks onboard (no alcohol permitted). Any soft drinks over 100ml will need to be purchased after you have passed through security.

"Please note this disruption does not affect any long-haul flights to Aruba, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Orlando and St Lucia and meal services on these flights will continue to operate as normal.

"Please be assured we are continuously monitoring the situation and working closely with our suppliers to limit the impact to the onboard service for our customers. We are directly contacting all customers impacted. We’re very sorry for any inconvenience caused."

The food shortage will impact flights from the following airports:

  • Birmingham
  • Bristol
  • Cardiff
  • Doncaster
  • Sheffield
  • Dublin
  • East Midlands
  • Edinburgh
  • Exeter
  • Glasgow
  • Humberside
  • Leeds Bradford
  • Luton
  • Manchester
  • Norwich
  • Teesside

It comes as holidaymakers have received an important warning about passports from TUI.

TUI informed travellers that a number of non-EU countries require having at least six months of validity on their passports on the date of arrival.

It recommended reviewing their destination's foreign travel advice page on the UK Foreign Office website to ensure their documents meet the relevant criteria.

For a 'worry free departure', the company also urged people to check their passport expiry date before setting off on their trip.

For those who are travelling to an EU country, TUI have said customers will need to look at their passport's issue date as well as the expiry date, and that their passport must be no more than 10 years old when they enter the destination country.

For most European countries, TUI says travellers must have at least three months left on their passport on the date they are due to travel home.
