TUI expanding to sell train tickets to customers instead of short-haul flights

Holiday firm TUI has announced it is going to offer customers train tickets instead of short-haul flights to discourage excessive plane travel.

The firm has launched the scheme in the Netherlands and, if successful, could move across the UK. So far, six routes have been chosen for the rail journeys instead of plane travel for TUI customers in the Netherlands. All the destinations covered during the launch of the initiative are city breaks, with travellers to Copenhagen, Prague, Vienna, Venice, Milan and Florence, all now being offered rail journeys as part of a collaboration between TUI and train travel start-up Green City Trip, reports The Mirror.

“Traveling more sustainably means offering your customers different transport options And trains are definitely part of that”, Arjan Kers, managing director of TUI Netherlands, said.

"Where the train can be an equivalent replacement for the airplane, we will gladly put this in the spotlight. And even where it is not a replacement but a valuable addition, we want to draw attention to it."

Introducing train travel in the UK would give passengers a third mode of transport, with TUI focusing on air travel and cruises for its British customers.

TUI is currently offering discounts on holidays departing in May and June using the code RELAX to save £100 on a £750 spend, or £200 on a £2,000 spend.
