Tui, easyJet and Jet2 latest as travel restrictions change

Holidaymakers are travelling abroad on their half-term getaways this week as several coronavirus restrictions were scrapped.

Turkey, Egypt and Portugal are among the most popular short-haul destinations, while departures to the US state of Florida, Dubai, Mexico and the Caribbean have sold well for longer-haul holidays, according to travel trade organisation Abta.

Meanwhile, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the scrapping of testing ahead of half-term comes as "good news" for families.

He added: "The UK has eased international travel measures for Covid-19 and now has one of the most free-flowing borders in the world - sending a clear message that we are open for business."

Ahead of the holidays, TUI, easyJet and Jet2 issued updates for travellers.

easyJet

The government in Cyprus has announced that until the end of February 2022 there will be changes to testing requirements for passengers entering the country.

EasyJet added: "In addition, 72 hours after arrival customers who have not received a booster vaccine will have to take an antigen test (provided free of charge by the Ministry of Health of Cyprus).

"Please make sure you check the latest government advice before you travel.

Tui

Andrew Flintham, managing director for TUI UK, said bookings for February half-term and Easter were now "comparable" to 2019.

He said: "There remains a huge pent-up demand for international travel and we've seen strong and sustained booking patterns since the announcement as customers look to go abroad with ease and without the added expense of testing."

Chief executive Fritz Joussen added: “We expect a strong summer 2022. There is pent-up demand among customers. We see this in all European source markets.

“Every step towards normality gives people confidence, and the demand for holidays increases immediately.”

Jet2

Jet2 said bookings for all destinations over the past four weeks for half-term trips were 30% higher than during the same period in 2020, which was before the pandemic hit the aviation industry.

Following Spain's decision to drop several restrictions, Steve Heapy, chief executive of airline and tour operator Jet2, said: "This is very welcome news for families who want nothing more than to holiday in their favourite Spanish destinations.

"We are pleased to see the Spanish government taking positive action to welcome more arrivals from the UK and we know that this will lead to an increase in bookings."
