TUI cancels further flights as Foreign Office issues travel update

Holiday company TUI has announced more flight cancellations due to ongoing unrest in Sri Lanka. In recent months, the country has faced shortages in food and fuel, leaving residents protesting in the street and resulting in violence with police.

The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has now advised against all essential travel to Sri Lanka. Therefore, more holidays and flights are being axed by TUI.

The Liverpool Echo reported that TUI had originally cancelled holidays inclusive of the end of June. It has now been confirmed by TUI that the cancellations will continue throughout July.

Somerset Live has reported that TUI has issued a statement following this announcement, saying: "Due to the ongoing political and economic instability in Sri Lanka, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has advised against all but essential travel. As a result, we’ve unfortunately had to cancel all holidays to Sri Lanka departing up to and including July 18 2022.

"We will be proactively contacting all impacted customers in departure date order to discuss their options. Please note this advice does not apply to customers transiting through Sri Lanka’s international airport and customers currently in resort can continue to enjoy their holiday as planned.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and update customers should there be any further updates. We would like to thank our customers for their understanding at this time."
