Last year’s 2000 Guineas runner-up, Master Of The Seas, will be a warm order to take the Group 3 Earl Of Sefton Stakes (3.00) in front of the ITV4 cameras at Newmarket’s Craven meeting.
However, he failed to settle in a red-hot Queen EIizabeth Stakes at Ascot last summer and, although a gelding op may have calmed him down, it could be worth siding with MEGALLAN. The colt, trained by John and Thady Gosden, won twice last season, including the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury, and looks the type to make a better four-year-old. He should find the 1m1f trip ideal on his comeback appearance.
The first ITV4 race, the 6f Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Handicap (1.50), could go to the Michael Dods-trained GALE FORCE MAYA. There are plenty in with chances but my selection ended last season winning 6f handicaps at Pontefract and over today’s course and distance, and he goes well fresh.
Derby-winning trainer Charlie Appleby can land the bet365 European Free Handicap (2.25) with 2000 Guineas entry New SCIENCE. The Ascot listed winner was only third at Meydan over a mile in February but was undone by a slow start and is sure to be sharper this afternoon.
Course-proven Cachet is the one to be on in the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes. She won here as a novice and, and was second to one of today’s rivals Hello You (now carrying a 3lb penalty) in the Group 2 Rockfel in the autumn. George Boughey’s filly was also third in the Fillies’ Mile here in October before an impressive close-up fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
