Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) on Sunday launched a series of heritage cycling tours where enthusiasts can spend time cycling around various landmarks, which have withstood the test of time.
The trail is designed in a way that it rediscovers Chennai’s rich historical relationship with the nations of the world. TTDC has launched cycling trail through collaboration with Chennai-based cycling group - Cycling Yogis. “TTDC introduced cycling heritage trails for the first time to create awareness about the history behind various historical monuments and buildings in the city. The trails are designed country-wise to understand the history behind their arrival and their contribution to the city. Cycling tours will also promote health and fitness and participants explore the city in a fun way” said TTDC managing director Sandeep Nanduri.
On Sunday, the 32 participants got to know about the of Portuguese in Madras. The ride began and ended at Hotel Tamil Nadu’s Island Ground, covering sites including the Santhome Basilica, St. Rita Chapel (Santhome), Dhyana Ashram (Foreshore Estate) and Portuguese Church Street.
On April 3, participants, who are expected to bring their own bicycles, can learn about the Armenian connection. On April 17, it would be the American connection, and on May 1, the George Town Trail. TTDC can arrange rental bicycles for participants at additional charge. The cost for the trial is ₹500 per person and it includes breakfast, an e-certificate and a bag.
