Dai Wai-tsun has scored his first goal for Wolverhampton since joining the English Premier League club’s Under-23 side this summer.

The 20-year-old Hong Kong player was instrumental in their 4-2 victory over Carlisle United in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

With the score locked at 1-1 in the Northern group G game, the attacking midfielder helped the visitors regain the lead in spectacular fashion as a patient build-up play was rewarded. Dai picked his spot from 25 metres out and fired into the bottom corner 40 minutes into the game.

Carlisle equalised again in the closing stages of the first half, but two more goals from Benny Ashley-Seal in the second half completed a memorable for Wolves at Brunton Park, which was also their first match in the competition.

Dai was delighted with his first goal and told the South China Morning Post that he hopes to keep knocking in goals for his new club.

“Hopefully it’s the first of many. Hopefully, it will boost my confidence for the next few games. This is just the beginning. I gotta keep it going and improving in every game.”

Wolves coach Rob Edwards was chuffed with his side’s application and attitude as they kicked off their campaign, saying: “We’re pleased to win, first and foremost. I’m delighted with the players for their performance. We made a number of changes and the players that came in acquitted themselves well, they showed a great attitude and aptitude to what we’re trying to do.

“There’s still things to improve on, no doubt about that, but after a long journey, to come away to a League Two team and score four goals is really pleasing.”

Wolves are tied with Blackpool in the four-team group with both sides winning their first match. They will travel to Morecambe for their second game on October 1.

In July, Dai joined the Premier League club Under-23 team for an undisclosed fee, signing a two-year contract with the option of extending his contract for another 12 months. He was with Oxford United since the 2018 summer but did not play a game before being loaned to FC Utrecht earlier this year. He made 12 appearances for the Dutch club in the second half of the season.
