Trying Christmas Yule logs from Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsburys

Chocolate. You simply cannot escape it over the festive period.

From tubs of Celebrations and Quality Street, to chocolate Santas, and of course hot chocolate. It is everywhere.

Fortunately, for those who aren't keen on the winter spices of mince pies, Christmas cake or pudding, it is of course a great alternative. And Yule logs are no exception.

The chocolate sponge roll is often slathered in thick layers of ganache, with a buttercream centre and a dusting of icing on top. You can eat it with a dollop of cream, ice cream, or on its own.

And for most families, it's a staple dessert on Christmas Day. We tried out some supermarket offerings, to see which one was the best, and two of them scored top marks.

Sainsbury's Milk Chocolate Yule Log, £4.50

Rating: 4/5

Serving: 8

Sainsbury's says: "We've packed this festive roulade with lashings of chocolatey flavour. Our hand-rolled cocoa sponge is loaded with rich buttercream, coated in milk chocolate and smothered with our indulgent Belgian chocolate buttercream. A dusting of sugar adds the perfect finishing touch."

The chocolate log has a dark exterior which really makes the white dusting on the outside pop. Onto the taste, the sponge is thick and moist and the chocolate and buttercream are both rich. You won't need a big wedge as the cake really is sweet, and could become sickly, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Great for chocolate lovers, but less is definitely more.

Morrisons Chocolate Yule log, £2

Rating: 5/5

Serving: 8

Priced at £2, this Christmas treat is good value for money and is the cheapest one we've tried for the taste test. It comes in a cardboard rectangular box decorated with red, green, gold and blue triangles.

Unlike the others, which have a sprinkling of icing on top, Morrisons' cake is covered in the stuff. Let's get into the taste.

The sponge is light and complimented by smooth, rich chocolate buttercream. What's more, there isn't a thick layer of chocolate covering the cake either, which is a bonus as the flavour of the sponge gets to have its moment without being buried in layers of sticky chocolate.

Asda Extra Special Luxury Yule Log, £4.50

Asda's was the best to look at (Liverpool Echo)

Rating: 2/5

Serving: 8

Asda describes this cake as having an "indulgent chocolate flavour buttercream all enrobed in a milk chocolate case and covered in ganache made with Belgian milk chocolate."

There's no denying that this Yule log looks the part, it is sprinkled with gold dusting and has large chocolate shavings sitting pretty on top of it. But looks can be deceiving and when it came to flavour, it fell short.

The chocolate ganache was lovely but too sweet and the shavings on top were, dare we say, bland. The sponge inside was dry and also tasteless.

Asda's Yule log was top tier last year but this time around, it's a complete disappointment.

Tesco Finest Belgian Chocolate Yule Log, £5

Rating: 5/5

Serving: 8

At a fiver, this is the most expensive cake out of the lot. So let's hope it is worth it.

The supermarket describes the cake as 'creamy and indulgent'. "This wonderfully soft chocolate sponge, rolled with buttercream and generously covered with rich milk chocolate," the description reads.

From the first bite, Tesco’s Yule log lives up to the description, it is creamy, soft and rich. The cake is moist and had a decent balance of sponge and buttercream. It would make the perfect post-Christmas dinner dessert.
