The federal government is set to officially recognize only two sexes, male and female, under an upcoming executive order expected to be signed by President Donald Trump. This order will reverse efforts made by the Biden administration to expand gender identity designations, including on passports.
During his inaugural address on Monday, Trump announced that the official policy of the United States government will now acknowledge only male and female genders. This move is seen as an early fulfillment of one of his campaign promises related to cultural issues.

A Trump administration official explained that the order aims to protect women from what they referred to as 'gender ideology extremism' and to reinstate biological truths within federal government policies. The official emphasized that male and female are immutable biological sexes grounded in fundamental reality.
Furthermore, the federal government will transition from using the term 'gender' to 'sex,' with sex being defined as an individual's unchangeable biological classification. This shift is intended to align federal policies with the belief that sex is a biological characteristic that cannot be altered.
