President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that despite the decrease in illegal border crossings into the United States during his tenure, he remains committed to imposing 25% tariffs on all Mexican and Canadian goods imported into the US. The 30-day pause on these tariffs, which were linked to illegal border crossings and the influx of fentanyl into the US, is scheduled to end on March 4.

During his first Cabinet meeting, Trump confirmed that the tariffs on Mexico and Canada would be implemented on April 2, coinciding with the deadline set by his administration for announcing retaliatory tariffs on all other countries. The Commerce Secretary emphasized the fentanyl-related aspect of the tariffs, stating that Mexico and Canada must demonstrate to the president that they have addressed his concerns to receive a potential pause in the tariffs.
