Recent events have seen a surge in the practice of hanging the United States flag upside down as a form of protest. This act, traditionally used to signal distress, has now become a symbol of discontent among supporters of former President Donald Trump following his conviction in a hush money trial.

Notable Trump allies such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and former national security adviser Michael Flynn have taken to social media to showcase their support for Trump by posting images of upside-down flags. The trend quickly spread across various pro-Trump social media accounts, with many displaying inverted flags on their porches and lawns.

Even organizations like the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, joined in on the protest by sharing an image of an upside-down flag above its headquarters in Washington, DC. In a separate incident, American flags placed outside a library in California were found turned upside down, causing a stir in the local community.

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn also displays support for Trump through inverted flag.

The controversy surrounding the practice of displaying the flag in this manner was reignited after it was revealed that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's household had an upside-down US flag in January 2021. Justice Alito explained that the flag was raised as a response to a neighborhood dispute, rather than as a political statement.

According to US code, the flag should only be displayed upside down as a signal of dire distress in situations of extreme danger to life or property. Despite this guideline, the trend of using the inverted flag as a form of protest appears to be gaining momentum, with public figures like country music star Jason Aldean also joining in by sharing images on social media.

The debate over the appropriate use of the US flag continues as individuals express their discontent through this symbolic gesture. As the trend spreads, it raises questions about the intersection of patriotism, protest, and freedom of expression in the current political climate.
