Trump Signs Order Limiting Federal Support For Gender Transitions

President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at cutting federal support for gender transitions for individuals under age 19. The order states that the United States will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support gender transitions for minors and will enforce laws prohibiting these procedures.

The executive order directs federally-run insurance programs, including TRICARE and Medicaid, to exclude coverage for gender-affirming care. It also calls on the Department of Justice to pursue litigation and legislation opposing the practice.

While some Medicaid programs cover gender-affirming care, the new order suggests that this practice could end. It targets hospitals and universities that receive federal funding and provide such care.

The language in the order uses terms like “maiming,” “sterilizing,” and “mutilation,” which contradicts typical practices for gender-affirming care in the U.S. Major medical groups, such as the American Medical Association, support access to this care.

The order has sparked concerns among families of transgender youth about access to necessary healthcare. Critics argue that the order interferes with medical decisions and restricts access to evidence-based healthcare supported by medical associations.

Trump's order is expected to face legal challenges, as many of his policies have in the past. The move is part of a series of actions by Trump to reverse protections for transgender individuals implemented by the Biden administration.

Transgender individuals have faced increased scrutiny and restrictions in recent years, with several states passing laws limiting gender-affirming medical care for minors. Additionally, some states have enacted laws restricting transgender individuals' participation in sports and dictating bathroom use.

While Trump's actions have garnered support from some voters, they have also faced criticism for potentially marginalizing transgender individuals and limiting their access to necessary healthcare.
