President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday banning gender transition treatments for individuals under 19 years old.
"It is the policy of the United States that it will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called 'transition' of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures," said Trump in a statement as reported by AP News.
The order's provisions include barring federally funded insurance programs, such as Medicaid and TRICARE, from covering gender transition services for minors. Additionally, it tasks the Department of Justice with aggressively pursuing litigation and legislative measures to oppose these procedures.
These actions reflect a broader GOP strategy to dismantle gender-affirming care policies implemented under Biden's administration, including protections for transgender individuals seeking healthcare.
The directive comes on the heels of Trump instructing the Pentagon to review policies that could result in banning transgender individuals from serving in the military.
