NEW YORK — Former President Donald Trump has accused Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg of election interference for pressing ahead with the Stormy Daniels hush money investigation.
As Trump’s possible indictment looms, the twice-impeached former president said Bragg “should be held accountable” for pursuing the case.
“ALVIN BRAGG SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE CRIME OF “INTERFERENCE IN A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION,” Trump wrote late Sunday on his social media site.
Trump claimed Monday that the statute of limitations has expired on his case, an assertion that legal experts reject.
“More importantly, THERE WAS NO CRIME!!!” Trump added.
The new outburst came as one of Trump’s lawyers prepared to appear before the grand jury investigating his role in the $130,000 payment to Daniels to keep her quiet in the days leading up to his win in the 2016 presidential election.
Robert Costello was expected to testify Monday at Trump’s request in a last-ditch effort to derail Bragg’s investigation, possibly by undermining the credibility of star witness Michael Cohen.
Trump said over the weekend that he will be indicted on Tuesday in connection with the Daniels payoff, which he initially said he knew nothing about and then falsely claimed were “legal expenses” for Cohen.
The grand jury, which meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, only votes on an indictment after all witnesses have finished testifying, meaning neither Trump nor anyone else knows whether or when he would be charged.
Trump would become the first former president to be charged with a crime. But he is also facing myriad other legal probes that could lead to more charges, including the Georgia investigation into his damand that election officials “find” enough votes to overturn Joe Biden’s election win in the Peach state.
Special counsel Jack Smith is also investigating Trump for taking scores of classified documents with him when he left the White House and for inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
