Trump says head tilt towards slide at rally made shooter miss: 'illegal immigration saved my life'

Donald Trump's interview with Elon Musk on X had a little bit of everything, including claims about a "zombie apocalypse" of immigration, labeling President Joe Biden as "stupid" and musings on developing a new missile defense system based on the one that defends Israel.

But one comment made by the Republican presidential candidate about the assassination attempt against him managed to stand out and quickly went viral.

The moment in question took place when Musk asked Trump about the exact moment when he tilted his head just before the bullet grazed his ear during the now infamous rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which prompted the following exchange:

Musk: "The sort of slide that got you to turn that saved your life, really, was the illegal immigration slide. Maybe it's worth talking about that slide."

Trump: "Illegal immigration saved my life, you're right. "

Trump then added that it was "an act of God" and a "miracle" that the chart was displayed at the right moment and then vowed to return to Butler in October so he can continue his speech by saying: "as I was saying prior to being so horribly interrupted..."

The rambling interview, which started off 40 minutes late, had a number of technical difficulties which Musk attributed to a "massive DDOS attack on X."

In other passages of the interview, Trump also made several comments that have since been debunked or questioned by factcheckers at the BBC.

  • On immigration he claimed that he thinks "20 million people have come across the border" and "millions are coming every month". BBC claims that since January 2021, the US Customs and Border Protection agency says there have been 10.1m encounters of illegal migrants by enforcement officers in the US.
  • On inflation, Trump claimed that the country has "the worst inflation we've had in 100 years". Inflation in fact peaked at 9.1% under Biden, the highest in 41 years.
  • Trump dismissed climate change, claiming that "the ocean is going to rise one eighth of an inch over the next 400 years", a number that is nowhere near the global average sea levels of the las decade which are nearly 4.8mm per year (0.19in), according to the World Meteorological Organization.

Also on climate change, Trump said that rather than seeing it as a problem, he feels it "would simply create more real estate opportunities":

You'll have more ocean front property, right? The biggest threat is not that. The biggest threat is nuclear warming, because we have five countries now that have significant nuclear power, and we have to not allow anything to happen with stupid people like Biden."
