Donald Trump's vow to end the Russia-Ukraine war in 24 hours has drawn fresh ridicule as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio admitted that peace talks may be abandoned within days, exposing the growing frustration and failure of Trump's highly publicized campaign promise.
Trump repeatedly claimed during his 2024 presidential campaign that he could end the war between Russia and Ukraine in just one day. He touted his supposed diplomatic prowess at multiple events, including a CNN town hall and a debate against then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
After winning the 2024 election and being sworn in as president, Trump declared his intention to mediate between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy immediately.
Trump also suggested that if he had been president in 2022, Russia wouldn't have invaded Ukraine in the first place. Upon taking office, however, he admitted that his 24-hour claim had been "a little bit sarcastic."
Most recently, high-level talks in Paris involving U.S., European, and Ukrainian officials received some positive reception. However, Rubio's blunt statement signaled that U.S. patience is wearing thin. He warned that if significant progress isn't made within days, the U.S. will likely withdraw from its mediation efforts entirely.
US will abandon efforts to end the war in Ukraine if it proves impossible to broker meaningful progress in the next several days, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

He also said that US advises EU to drop sanctions on Russia to reach a “deal.”

Trump is now facing a wave of online mockery after Rubio's admission that the U.S. may soon abandon its peace efforts, with critics highlighting the gap between Trump's bold campaign pledge to end the war in "24 hours" and the stalled reality nearly three months into his presidency.
Social media erupted with memes and sarcastic commentary, labeling his promise as "just another lie," while resurfaced clips of Trump's confident town hall declarations were shared alongside news of the deadlocked negotiations.
I thought Trump was ending it on day one. Just another lie

Even as the Trump administration scrambles to salvage some diplomatic gains, such as a minerals deal with Ukraine, the broader goal of ending the war appears increasingly elusive.
