A former U.S. ambassador to Russia slammed Donald Trump's actions on the Ukraine-Russia war, comparing his fallout with Kyiv's Volodymyr Zelensky and approach to Moscow's Vladimir Putin to the U.S. switching sides during World War II.
Michael McFaul, ambassador to Russia during the second Obama administration, said on X "Imagine if Roosevelt lost the 1940 election to an America Firster who then had the US switch sides in World War II (before we were attacked). We'd all be speaking German now."

"That's why this current moment feels like. 3 years into a war between an imperialist dictatorship with autocratic allies and a democracy, Trump just switched sides," he added.
McFaul, who often comments on affairs related to Russia on social media, also reacted to Trump's subsequent order to halt all military aid to Ukraine, saying his "Art of the Deal" involves "only sticks" for Zelensky and "only carrots" for Putin.
The former diplomat also wrote an op-ed on U.S. News, claiming it has "become obvious that the president's focus is not on peacemaking, but rather on building his relationship with and making deals to suit Russian dictator Vladimir Putin."
"There is no universe in which Putin is a U.S. ally or trustworthy partner. He seeks to weaken the United States, divide us from our allies and strengthen the autocratic world at the expense of the democratic one," he added.
Trump has cut off military aid to Ukraine after their televised fallout at the White House last Friday. "The President has been clear that he is focused on peace. We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well," a White House official told CNN. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution."
The meeting in front of reporters saw Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance attack Zelensky for being ungrateful and disrespectful. Zelensky was then asked to leave the White House without signing a planned mineral-rights deal as a pathway to a peace plan.
Trump now reportedly wants a public apology before welcoming Zelensky back to peace talks and he has ordered than any military aid that was in the pipeline to Ukraine be frozen, CNN reported.
On Sunday, European leaders held a summit in London, agreed on a four-point plan to guarantee Ukraine's defense in a peace deal with Russia.
