President Donald Trump's Latin America envoy said he anticipates that the administration will get "very creative" to achieve leadership changes in Cuba.

Special envoy Mauricio Claver-Carone declared that Cuba's government structure is "obviously dead" in an interview with Politico. He said that the Cuban people's desire for change is "overwhelming," and that the U.S. will be ready when that happens.

Claver-Carone added that the Trump administration will be "very creative" once the time comes for the country's "Democratic change," however he declined to comment on what that creativity really entailed.

During Trump's first term, when Claver-Carone served as the Senior Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the National Security Council, he said the administration focused on the role of global actors, such as China, in the region.

But now that their influence has "declined significantly," Claver-Carone explained that this presents an opportunity for the U.S. to "restore its leadership role."

The results of a recent survey by AtlasIntel for Bloomberg appeared to agree with Clavor-Carone's plans for expanded U.S. leadership, as the majority of Latin Americans said they would support the U.S. using its military to oust Venezuela's authoritarian president Nicolas Maduro.

Trump's special envoy was previously labeled an "enemy of America" by Cuban state press in August 2020, as reported by CiberCuba.
