President-elect Donald Trump has nominated a team of medical contrarians and health care critics to lead federal health agencies, aiming to reshape how the government oversees medicines, health programs, and nutrition. These nominees are expected to implement Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s ambitious 'Make America Healthy Again' agenda, which includes removing additives from U.S. foods, addressing conflicts of interest, and promoting healthier nutrition programs.

National Institutes of Health

Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Trump's pick to lead the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is known for opposing pandemic lockdowns and vaccine mandates. He advocates for focusing on herd immunity and protecting high-risk individuals rather than implementing widespread lockdowns. Kennedy's plan for NIH includes shifting focus to chronic diseases and ensuring funding is free from conflicts of interest.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Kennedy has criticized vaccines and the CDC, alleging corruption within the agency. His nominee for the CDC, Dave Weldon, has a history of questioning the relationship between vaccines and autism. Weldon may support efforts to downsize the CDC, including eliminating certain departments.

Trump's pick for the FDA, Dr. Marty Makary, shares Kennedy's concerns about overprescribing drugs and the influence of pharmaceutical companies. Kennedy aims to overhaul FDA departments and address issues like the overuse of pesticides on foods. Makary has questioned the necessity of COVID-19 vaccine boosters for young children.

Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services

Dr. Mehmet Oz, nominated to lead the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services, has a background in wellness and lifestyle. Kennedy has not targeted the Affordable Care Act yet but opposes expanding coverage for weight-loss drugs, advocating for healthier food options instead. Oz may focus on expanding Medicare Advantage if confirmed.

Surgeon General

Trump's pick for Surgeon General, Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, has a background in urgent care and has appeared on TV shows. Kennedy has not publicly outlined his expectations for the Surgeon General role. The Surgeon General can influence public health policies and advisories.
