Tom Homan, the designated 'border czar' by President Donald Trump, revealed on Wednesday night that preparations are being made for the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants. Homan emphasized the need for additional resources and funding from Congress to carry out these plans effectively.
During an interview, Homan stated that a minimum of 100,000 detention beds would be required to detain undocumented immigrants, a significant increase from the current 40,000 beds allocated to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He also highlighted the necessity for more ICE agents to execute the proposed mass deportation strategy.
Homan emphasized that the success of the operation hinges on the financial support provided by Congress. The exact amount of funding that the Trump administration will request from the Republican-controlled House and Senate remains uncertain at this time.
In addition to seeking funding, Homan mentioned the possibility of enlisting the assistance of the military in transporting migrants. While clarifying that military personnel would not be involved in apprehending individuals, Homan described them as a potential 'force multiplier' for logistical tasks that do not require law enforcement authority.
President-elect Trump had previously announced Homan's appointment as the 'border czar' for his upcoming administration. Homan, who previously served as the acting director of ICE in the initial Trump administration, is expected to play a pivotal role in overseeing immigration enforcement and border security initiatives.
