Former President Donald Trump is safe following what the FBI is investigating as an apparent assassination attempt in Florida.

In a press conference Sunday, the FBI confirmed it responded to West Palm Beach, Florida, and is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of the former president.

Trump's campaign declined to provide further details after issuing a statement that Trump was "safe following gunshots in his vicinity."

According to CNN, the campaign later sent a fundraising email in which Trump assured supporters of his safety: "There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!" Trump wrote in the email Sunday afternoon.

A "person of interest" was taken into custody and is being questioned, according to Teri Barbera, spokesperson for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi also confirmed Trump's safety and stated that more information would be released as the investigation unfolds.

Donald Trump Jr. posted on social media that an AK-47 was recovered "in the bushes" near the golf course.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the situation. Harris later posted on X, stating, "I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America."

The incident comes two months after Trump was wounded by gunfire during a rally in Butler, Pa.

This is a developing story.
