During a rally in Kinston, North Carolina, former President Trump took jabs at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, calling him a 'disgrace' despite receiving his endorsement for the 2024 presidential race. Trump expressed his hope to see McConnell removed from his position soon, accusing him of assisting the Biden-Harris administration.
McConnell, the longest-serving party leader in Senate history, announced earlier this year that he would not seek the leadership role after the 2024 elections. Despite their rocky relationship in the past, McConnell endorsed Trump in March, stating that Trump had earned the support of Republican voters.
Trump, addressing the crowd at the rally, expressed disbelief at McConnell's endorsement, sarcastically remarking that it must have been a 'painful day' for him. He criticized McConnell for providing what he called 'necessary votes,' implying disagreement with some of McConnell's actions in Congress.
The public mocking by Trump follows revelations from a new book that detailed McConnell's private opinions of the former president, including calling him a 'sleazeball,' 'stupid,' and a 'narcissist.'
The upcoming secret ballot election for McConnell's successor is scheduled for November 13, just after the general elections. Senate Minority Whip John Thune, along with Senators John Cornyn and Rick Scott, are among those vying to replace McConnell as the leader of the Senate Republicans.
