Trump Holds Rally In South Bronx, Historic Republican Territory

Donald Trump Former U.S. President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's rally in Sioux City

Former President Trump made a significant move by holding an event in the South Bronx today, a location that has historically been a stronghold for Democratic candidates. The South Bronx, part of the district represented by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has not seen a Republican presidential candidate win since Calvin Coolidge in 1924. Despite this, thousands of supporters are expected to attend the event.

This visit follows Trump's recent stop at a bodega in Harlem, showcasing his efforts to engage with communities typically not aligned with the Republican Party. The Bronx, where Ronald Reagan was the last Republican to secure a victory in New York, rarely sees Republican candidates campaigning in the area.

In 1924, the year Coolidge won the Bronx, Johnson & Johnson introduced the first mass-produced Band-Aids. Some critics have drawn parallels between the need for Band-Aids to fix campaign issues and the challenges faced by the Biden campaign, particularly in appealing to demographics such as black, Hispanic, and youth voters.

Reflecting on the historical context of 1924, the Washington Senators emerged victorious in the World Series against the New York Giants. Drawing a modern parallel, the Washington Nationals, previously known as the Senators, clinched the World Series title in 2019. The Senators later relocated to become the Minnesota Twins in 1960 and then the Texas Rangers in 1972, ultimately winning the World Series in the previous year.

Coolidge, known for his support of Prohibition, saw the era come to an end in 1933 when the law was repealed. Additionally, he made history by delivering the first radio broadcast of an official presidential address, showcasing his embrace of emerging technologies during his presidency.
