Former President Donald Trump has publicly announced his intention to back Rep. Byron Donalds in the 2026 race for Florida governor, should the Republican congressman decide to run. Trump made the endorsement on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that Donalds would make a 'truly Great and Powerful Governor for Florida' and urging him to 'RUN, BYRON, RUN!'
While Donalds has not officially declared his candidacy, he hinted at an upcoming announcement following Trump's endorsement, expressing his commitment to working with the former president to 'Keep Florida Great.'

Trump's early endorsement, even before any candidates have officially entered the race, underscores his interest in ensuring that a close ally leads his adopted home state of Florida. The move could potentially influence other prominent Republicans who were considering gubernatorial bids, such as state Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, former Rep. Matt Gaetz, and even First Lady Casey DeSantis.
Notably, there had been speculation about Donalds being a potential successor to Governor Ron DeSantis, who is term-limited and cannot seek reelection. However, a public falling out occurred between DeSantis and Donalds when the congressman endorsed Trump in the presidential primary, causing embarrassment to the governor who believed he had Donalds' support or at least a commitment to remain neutral until he entered the race.
Trump's enduring popularity in Florida and his proactive involvement in state politics could reshape the landscape of the upcoming gubernatorial race, prompting potential candidates to reassess their political ambitions and alliances.
