Good afternoon. The US broadcasting regulator has hit back after Donald Trump demanded the CBS network be stripped of its licence for airing an edited answer in a primetime interview with Kamala Harris.
In a social media outburst, Trump accused the network of “a giant fake news scam” after the 60 Minutes program broadcast a clip from Harris about Israel that was shorter and snappier than the version transmitted in the trailer. The comments were condemned as “threats against free speech” by the chair of the Federal Communications Commission, who said broadcasting licences could not be revoked because a presidential candidate disliked coverage.
Meanwhile Trump used a campaign event in Detroit, the largest city in the key swing state of Michigan, to insult the city, saying the “whole country will end up being like Detroit” if Harris were to win.
Elsewhere in the US, Barack Obama made his first appearance on the campaign trail for Kamala Harris on Thursday, speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania and at an event for Black voters, where he urged men in particular to drop “excuses” and get behind the vice-president.

Man rescued clinging to esky 48km off Florida coast | A US Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a man left floating in the Gulf of Mexico after his boat was stranded in waters roiled by Hurricane Milton, in what a coast guard official described as “a nightmare scenario”.
One dead and 12 rescued from Colorado goldmine | An elevator malfunction at the Mollie Kathleen tourist site left one person dead and four injured, with the group trapped underground for several hours while rescuers worked out how to reach them.
Matildas coach calls for Sam Kerr to join camp | Tom Sermanni wants the injured striker to meet up with the Australia squad ahead of friendlies against Switzerland and Germany later this month. The interim coach has handed a maiden call-up to rising star Daniela Galic, while explosive winger Cortnee Vine is unavailable.
Bear undergoes brain surgery | Two-year-old brown bear Boki went under the knife in the first operation of its kind in the UK, after an MRI scan showed a buildup of fluid in his brain. Carers said Boki was awake and doing well, but “not out of the woods” yet.
