Trump Declines To Comment On Preventing China From Taking Taiwan

President-elect Donald Trump speaks

During his first Cabinet meeting, President Donald Trump refrained from commenting on whether his administration would take action to prevent China from seizing Taiwan by force. When asked about this issue, Trump stated, 'I never comment on that — I don’t comment on anything, because I don’t want to ever put myself in that position.'

Trump further explained that if he were to address such matters, it would be done in a more private setting with specific individuals. These remarks come amidst tensions between the US and China regarding Taiwan.

Recently, China criticized the US for what it perceived as a shift in its stance on Taiwan independence. The State Department made changes to its website, removing a statement that previously declared the US does not support Taiwan independence. This alteration raised concerns and drew attention to the delicate relationship between the US, China, and Taiwan.

While the US adheres to the 'one China policy,' recognizing the People’s Republic as the legitimate government, it has not endorsed China's claim of sovereignty over Taiwan. Trump's comments hinted at a more conciliatory approach towards China, emphasizing his positive relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trump expressed his desire for Chinese investment in the US and emphasized the importance of fostering a strong relationship with China. He dismissed notions that the US is unwelcoming towards Chinese involvement, stating, 'We’ll do things with China, the relationship we’ll have with China will be a very good one.'

As the situation continues to evolve, the dynamics between the US, China, and Taiwan remain complex and subject to ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain stability in the region.
