Former President Donald Trump delivered remarks to an economic group in Detroit, criticizing the city and warning that the whole country could end up like Detroit if Vice President Kamala Harris is elected. Trump's comments were made during a speech to the Detroit Economic Club, where he addressed the auto industry, a crucial sector in Michigan.

While Trump referred to Detroit as a 'developing' city at one point, he later stated that the entire country would resemble Detroit under a Harris presidency. Democrats in the state swiftly responded to Trump's remarks, with Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan highlighting the city's progress in reducing crime and increasing its population.

Various Democratic officials, including U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar and Attorney General Dana Nessel, criticized Trump for his comments about Detroit. Governor Gretchen Whitmer also condemned Trump's remarks, emphasizing that Detroiters would remember his words in the upcoming election.

In response, Vice President Harris praised Las Vegas as a 'great city' and criticized Trump for disparaging another American city. Wayne County, where Detroit is located, has historically not favored Trump in elections, with the President receiving around 30% of the vote in both 2016 and 2020.

Trump's campaign defended his comments, attributing Detroit's challenges to policies supported by Harris. The campaign stated that Trump's policies would bring economic success and stability to Detroit, helping the city reach its full potential.

Despite Trump's remarks, Detroit has made significant strides in recent years, transitioning from a struggling city to a national attraction. The city has improved its finances, enhanced city services, and attracted major events like the NFL draft. Detroit is now a popular destination for conventions and meetings, showcasing its revitalization.

While some attendees at the event understood Trump's comments in the context of Detroit's past financial difficulties, others viewed it as a negative portrayal of the city. Trump's criticism of Detroit is not unprecedented, as he has previously made disparaging remarks about cities where he campaigned.

Overall, Detroit's transformation and resurgence demonstrate its resilience and potential for continued growth, despite political rhetoric that may seek to undermine its progress.
