President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing Richard 'Ric' Grenell, his former acting director of National Intelligence, as a special envoy for Iran, according to sources familiar with the transition plans. Trump praised Grenell as a 'fabulous person' and 'A STAR,' hinting at a potential high-level position for him.
Despite the speculation, Grenell denied the report, calling it 'made up.' Trump shared the news on Truth Social without confirming or denying the information, but expressing his admiration for Grenell's capabilities.
This isn't the first time Grenell's name has been floated for a significant role in the Trump administration. Previously, he was rumored as a candidate for Secretary of State and special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, but those positions went to others.
If Grenell is appointed as the special envoy for Iran, his responsibilities would include developing, coordinating, and implementing the State Department's Iran policy. The chosen individual would report directly to Sen. Marco Rubio, pending Senate approval of his nomination.
Grenell has been a staunch supporter of Trump, frequently appearing on the campaign trail during the 2024 election to show his backing for the president-elect.
