Florida Rep. Mike Waltz, Trump's pick for national security adviser, revealed in an interview that the president-elect is exploring ways to safeguard TikTok. This comes in response to reports suggesting Trump may issue an executive order to prevent a potential nationwide ban of the popular platform.
Last week, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a case challenging a law that could lead to TikTok's ban in the U.S. The law requires ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to divest the app on national security grounds. The Justices appeared inclined to uphold the law, prompting Trump to consider protective measures for TikTok.
Waltz emphasized Trump's support for TikTok, highlighting its significance as a platform used by many Americans, including during the president's campaign. He stressed Trump's commitment to safeguarding user data and hinted at potential negotiations to address the situation.
Meanwhile, Trump's attorney general nominee, Pam Bondi, refrained from commenting on whether she would uphold a TikTok ban during a Senate hearing.
Trump's stance on TikTok has evolved, initially attempting to ban the app over national security concerns but later embracing it during his 2024 campaign. TikTok played a pivotal role in reaching out to younger voters, particularly males, with content tailored to go viral. Trump's campaign utilized the platform effectively, leading him to pledge to 'save TikTok' and acknowledge its contribution to securing more youth votes.
