President-elect Donald Trump discussed his recent conversations with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during an awards ceremony, where he reiterated his stance on curbing immigration and imposing tariffs on the two countries.

Speaking at the Fox Nation’s Patriot Awards in Brookville, New York, Trump recounted his meeting with Trudeau and emphasized the proposed 25% tariffs, stating that it was just the beginning of his trade strategy.

Trump also highlighted his phone call with Sheinbaum, where he stressed the importance of addressing the influx of migrants over the US-Mexico border in relation to the tariffs he proposed. He claimed that after their conversation, Mexico agreed to halt the flow of migrants, a statement that was later refuted by Sheinbaum.

He highlighted proposed 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada.

Sheinbaum had previously hinted at the possibility of Mexico imposing retaliatory counter-tariffs in response to any tariffs imposed by the US. It is worth noting that under the existing trade agreement between the US, Mexico, and Canada, imports from the two neighboring countries are exempt from tariffs.

Trump has not provided specific details on how he plans to implement the proposed tariff increases without violating the trade agreement. The situation remains fluid as discussions between the leaders continue, with trade relations between the three countries hanging in the balance.
