Former President Donald Trump made controversial remarks in an interview on Tuesday, claiming that Vice President Kamala Harris, who is married to a Jewish man, 'doesn’t like Jewish people.' Trump also seemed to agree with a radio host who made derogatory comments about second gentleman Doug Emhoff being 'a crappy Jew.'
During the interview on WABC radio, Trump alleged that Harris appeared uncomfortable while meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting she harbors disdain towards Israel and Jewish people. He further criticized Jewish voters who support Democrats, stating that they should 'have their head examined' and calling them 'fools.'
Trump's comments come amidst escalating attacks on Harris, as she is seen as a potential Democratic presidential nominee. The Harris campaign responded by emphasizing the importance of unity and progress over division and hate.
Trump's remarks about Harris disliking Jewish people were not isolated incidents, as he had previously made similar claims at a Turning Point USA gathering in Florida. He has faced backlash in the past for comments perceived as antisemitic, including suggesting that Jews who vote for Democrats 'hate Israel.'
Second gentleman Doug Emhoff, who is Jewish, has been vocal about combating antisemitism and has actively participated in Jewish traditions at the White House. Despite Trump and the radio host's disparaging remarks, Emhoff's office declined to comment on the matter.
Additionally, Trump's campaign criticized Emhoff's daughter for supporting the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, an organization that Israel has sought to ban. European leaders have refuted claims that the agency supports terrorism, calling such accusations baseless.
