Donald Trump's campaign and the Republican National Committee have announced a staggering fundraising total of $141 million for the month of May. This impressive haul includes a significant amount of donations received following Trump's guilty verdict in his criminal hush money trial.
The campaign's decision to release these numbers early indicates their belief that the outpouring of contributions reflects a surge in support from Trump's followers and demonstrates that the verdict has not dampened his aspirations to return to the White House.
In comparison, President Joe Biden's campaign has yet to disclose its May fundraising figures. In April, Trump and the GOP raised $76 million, surpassing Biden and the Democratic National Committee's reported total of over $51 million for that month.
The exact amount spent by Trump and the GOP in May remains undisclosed, but this substantial sum is expected to help narrow the fundraising gap that has persisted between the two campaigns.
According to the Trump campaign, they received over two million donations in May, with an average contribution of $70.27. Notably, 37.6% of these donations were made online within the first 24 hours following the verdict. Additionally, approximately a quarter of the donors were new supporters of the campaign.
The campaign's senior advisers expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received, attributing it to the public's rejection of what they perceive as a biased trial against Trump. They emphasized that the true verdict will be delivered by the American people on November 5th.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign commented on the fundraising figures, suggesting that Trump's wealthy associates are backing a 'white collar crook' to advance their own interests at the expense of working-class Americans.
Trump's campaign had previously announced raising over $50 million online in the day following the verdict, marking a historic moment as the first former president and major party presumptive nominee to be convicted of a crime. Trump is scheduled for sentencing on July 11.
