Former President Trump's campaign has confirmed that some of its internal communications were hacked, as reported on Saturday. The campaign stated that the documents were illegally obtained from foreign sources hostile to the United States, with the intention of interfering in the 2024 election and causing chaos within the democratic process.
A communication director for the Trump campaign, Steven Cheung, highlighted that a recent report from Microsoft revealed that Iranian hackers breached the account of a high-ranking official on a U.S. presidential campaign in June 2024. This incident coincided with President Trump's selection of a Vice Presidential nominee. Cheung also mentioned that the hack, allegedly carried out by Iran, occurred following reports of an Iranian plot to assassinate President Trump around the same time as the Butler, PA tragedy.
Cheung emphasized that the Iranians are aware of President Trump's stance against their activities and are attempting to disrupt his efforts. He cautioned that any media or news outlet publishing the hacked documents or internal communications would be playing into the hands of America's enemies.
The documents shared with sources reportedly included a dossier on Trump's potential running mate, JD Vance, dating back to February. The Trump campaign did not disclose whether they had involved law enforcement authorities regarding the hacking incident.
