Stances on Medicare for All
Harris initially co-sponsored Sanders' Medicare for All legislation in 2017, emphasizing the need for all Americans to have access to healthcare. However, her full embrace of the system in 2019, suggesting the elimination of private insurers, drew criticism and raised questions about her commitment to the plan.
In response to the backlash, Harris's team clarified that while she supported Medicare for All, she was open to various legislative approaches that aimed to achieve universal coverage. Her subsequent health care plan, released during the primary debates, proposed a transition to a Medicare for All-type system over a decade, allowing a role for private insurance companies within the healthcare framework.

Harris's proposal aimed to expand the existing Medicare system while permitting private insurers to offer Medicare plans that adhered to strict requirements set by Medicare. This departure from Sanders' bill was influenced by pressure from labor leaders and a desire to avoid raising taxes.
Despite Harris's efforts to present her plan as a viable alternative, Sanders and his advisers criticized it as deviating from true Medicare for All principles and enabling private insurance corporations to profit at the expense of patient care.
