Trump Backs Speaker Johnson For House Leadership

trump

President-elect Trump recently voiced his full support for Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., during a closed-door meeting with GOP lawmakers. Trump assured current and incoming members that he backed Johnson '100%' ahead of the 119th Congress leadership elections. While Johnson was not facing significant challenges, a group of conservative members threatened to slow down the process by requesting a recorded vote for the Speaker.

Trump's endorsement of Johnson is expected to quell any major opposition the Louisiana Republican was facing, as indicated by a member of the House Freedom Caucus. Additionally, Trump urged Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., and Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., to maintain unity in the upcoming Congressional term.

During the meeting, Trump also announced plans for what he described as the 'largest deportation operation in history,' which garnered support and cheers from House Republicans. He acknowledged the presence of Elon Musk and recognized his incoming Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., whom he appointed as the new UN ambassador.

Furthermore, Trump expressed optimism about the GOP's prospects in future elections, suggesting that the party could secure victories in traditionally liberal states like California and New York. He even playfully hinted at the possibility of running for a fourth term, contingent on certain conditions.

As lawmakers reconvened in Washington for a lame duck session, Trump's appearance underscored the Republican Party's continued majority in the House and Senate. With control of both chambers, Republicans are poised to advance conservative legislation more effectively in the upcoming term.

Reflecting on the recent election results, Trump emphasized the unexpected success of the GOP, particularly in swing states. He highlighted the party's victories in key battlegrounds and expressed confidence in expanding their reach to states previously deemed unwinnable.
