Former President Donald Trump announced plans to create a government efficiency commission to audit the entire federal government, with billionaire Elon Musk set to lead the initiative. The commission, proposed by Musk, aims to identify and eliminate fraud and improper payments within the government, potentially saving taxpayers trillions of dollars.

During a speech at the Economic Club of New York, Trump outlined his vision for the commission, emphasizing the need for drastic reforms to address the estimated hundreds of billions of dollars lost to fraud and improper payments in 2022 alone. He also pledged to cut 10 government regulations for every new regulation implemented if elected in November.

Trump and Musk have formed an unexpected alliance, with Musk expressing his willingness to serve America without pay, title, or recognition. The two influential figures have discussed potential roles for Musk in a second Trump administration, highlighting Musk's reputation as a skilled reformer.

Notably, Musk, who previously identified as a moderate Democrat, endorsed Trump shortly after an assassination attempt last month. Their collaboration signals a shift from rivalry to partnership, with Musk praising Trump's commitment to government reform.

Efforts to streamline government operations are not new, with past initiatives like the National Partnership for Reinventing Government under President Bill Clinton aiming to enhance efficiency and responsiveness in federal agencies. Trump's proposal, backed by Musk's leadership, represents a bold step towards reshaping government practices and reducing wasteful spending.
