The latest Quinnipiac University poll results have revealed a tight race between former President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris following President Biden's decision to withdraw from the race. According to the poll, Trump has the support of 49% of voters, while Harris is preferred by 47%.
In a hypothetical six-way race that includes other candidates like independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump leads with 45% support, followed by Harris at 41%. Kennedy Jr. garnered 6% support among voters.
Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy noted that despite the change at the top of the Democratic ticket, Harris enters the race with numbers similar to Biden's.
Biden's decision to drop out came after mounting pressure from fellow Democrats following a lackluster debate performance that raised doubts about his ability to defeat Trump in the upcoming election.
Endorsing Harris as his successor, Biden emphasized that choosing her as his running mate was his best decision and urged Democrats to unite to defeat Trump.
With the Democratic National Convention approaching, Harris aims to consolidate support for her candidacy and challenge Trump in November.
The poll also highlighted Trump's highest approval rating to date, with 46% of respondents viewing him favorably and 49% unfavorably.
Conducted between July 19-21, the Quinnipiac University poll surveyed 1,257 registered voters nationwide, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
