It’s no doubt that Troye Sivan‘s latest album, Something To Give Each Other, is jam-packed with bangers. After all, it gifted Sivan three ARIA Awards, including Solo Artist Of The Year and Album Of The Year. However, the story behind the project is truly why this album just has the je ne sais qoui.
As Troye Sivan took to the 2024 ARIA Awards stage for Album Of The Year, the “Rush” singer revealed that his award-winning album Something To Give Each Other was not only inspired by “moments between lockdown in Melbourne” and his breakup but also an impactful one-night stand.
“Quick story. I was going through the breakup, really really depressed, and I meet this one guy I have this one night stand with him,” Sivan began.
“We had this incredible, incredible connection and I’m like, oh my god I thought the connection could only look like one thing, you know? and then I started to realise how many people there are in the world and how incredible connections of all kinds can feel and how it can present in all in these different ways.
“It’s super weird but I write this album basically about this random stranger I never saw again.”
Although you’d think the story ends there, the plot actually thickens…
“Until, I was sitting at a wine bar in Melbourne and I see him and he randomly came up,” Sivan continued, revealing that he forgot his name upon their unexpected rendezvous.
“The crazy thing is, I said to him, ‘Can I say something’ — the album is out at this point, you know it’s going really well — I said to him, ‘Just so you know it’s about you. You sorta started me on this thing.’ And he looked really confused.”
However, in a spicy plot twist, Sivan then revealed that the anonymous hook-up said his album, Something To Give Each Other, was helping him through a recent breakup. Mind-fucking-blown.
“Music is really really cool. Go have a one-night stand with someone. You never know what could happen,” Sivan laughed before ending his speech.
With the former YouTuber revealing this golden piece of lore, it makes so much sense as to why I am obsessed with this album.
As we said earlier, Sivan left the 2024 ARIA Awards with three awards including Best Pop Release for “You Just Got Me Started” and Solo Artist Of The Year and Album Of The Year.
The beloved pop king also made punters erupt with laughter after he dropped an f-bomb after he forgot to plug his new role as “Chief Vibes Officer” for Smirnoff during a chat with ARIAs host Tim Blackwell.
