Troubled Leicester could provide Arsenal with unusual Premier League title omen

Arsenal's Premier League title wins have coincided with dark times for Leicester - and another repeat could be on the cards this term.

The Gunners are chasing a first top flight success since 2004 and are sat top heading into the business end of the season. Few expected the north Londoners to challenge this term, but Mikel Arteta's young side have surpassed all expectations to rivals champions Manchester City.

Leicester meanwhile, who've finished fifth twice in the last three years and won an FA Cup, are facing the drop. The Foxes currently sit in the bottom three having seen Brendan Rodgers leave the club recently - but their poor season could be a good omen for Arsenal.

The last two times the Foxes have been relegated from the Premier League it has been Arsenal who've claimed the title. Back in 2004 they followed Leeds and Wolves down into the Championship whilst the Gunners completed an unbeaten season, beating Leicester on the final day.

Two years prior to that the Foxes, then led by Micky Adams, saw their six-year stay in the Premier League ended as they, Ipswich and Derby all went down to the second tier. The same year Arsene Wenger presided over an impressive campaign that saw Arsenal win the double.

Lightning could about to strike for a third time with the King Power outfit currently languishing in the bottom three having lost to relegation rivals Bournemouth at home last time out. They still have eight games with which to save themselves after hiring Dean Smith until the end of the season.

It is a fall from grace for the side who, albeit surprisingly, claimed the title in 2016. That year it was Arsenal who chased them for part of the season, eventually finishing in second. The Gunners' hopes of becoming champions did take a hit on Sunday however as they were held by Liverpool.

Arteta's side had led 2-0 at Anfield before the hosts rallied in the second-half - and could've claimed all three points in what was a dramatic finale. It now means that, should City win all their games, which includes a clash against Arsenal at the Etihad, then they will be champions.

The Gunners boss said on Sunday: "When you concede at the end, you always focus on dropping two points because you have it and you are suffering but you are relying on certain moments and the feeling is 'Ah, we should have done it!' But being fair to ourselves, they had four big chances where they could have scored and they missed the penalty.

"We will have to look at ourselves in the mirror and we should have done much better in the second half."
