Troon FC set to make history as switch is flicked on Portland Park floodlights

Richard Henderson says Troon are hoping for a bumper crowd to see them make history on Friday evening.

The new Portland Park floodlights will be switched on for the first time for the West of Scotland League game against Petershill.

Club secretary Richard hopes fans turn out in numbers to see Troon write another chapter in their annals.

He said: “We have been working towards this day for years and it’s exciting times at Troon FC.”

Troon previously had training lights in 1995 but at the time were allowed only to host friendlies. They finally bit the dust in 2007 after coming down in a major storm.

The new £60,000 lights have been erected by Halliday Lighting, with funding help from South Ayrshire Council, and were signed off by engineers at the start of last week. Now it’s all systems go for the visit of the Peasies which kicks off at 7.30pm.

Work will begin in early February on a brand new multi-use games area behind the goal at the far end of the ground.

Once completed, Portland Park will have the use of two floodlit astro five-a-side parks, or one seven-a-side park which will be available for open hire as well as the club’s academy teams to book.

MAYBOLE boss Carlo Walker has hailed the signing of Ross Robertson as a major signal of intent.

The 31-year-old striker helped Ayr United win promotion to the First Division in 2011 before spells with Glenafton, Troon and Hurlford.

Walker said: “Ross hasn’t played for a couple of years but he has trained with us for the last month. He’s a Premier League striker and it shows our ambition to lure a player of his calibre. We are delighted to have signed him.”
