Tronsmart Bang SE review: ultra-portable party speaker packs a punch

Tronsmart is a reputable Chinese electronics firm that delivers generally pleasing audio products at affordable prices.

The company was founded in 2013 so it is celebrating its 10th anniversary next year.

Earlier this year it released a portable party speaker Tronsmart Bang that won huge praise for its Sound Pulse audio and built-in RGB lighting which illuminates your music in sync to the beat.

The portable party speaker market has plenty of stiff competition from the likes of JBL and Sony, but Tronsmart Bang held its own.

It is now joined by the smaller and lighter Bang SE, an ultra-portable unit that weighs more than 900g less and comes with a carrying strap as well as a handle so taking this out and about with you is a much easier task.

The new true wireless speaker is less expensive too, but still comes with the front and side RGB lighting. It's an ideal Christmas gift, given its inexpensive price point.

Audio power

You get 40w of audio output, with two full range driver units delivering a bright and wide soundstage.

I’ve been testing the speaker for several weeks now and Bang SE delivers consistently pleasing audio at loud volumes and projects sound effectively both indoors and outdoors.

I’ve tested it on a range of content but and found the SoundPulse audio setting the most appealing as it boosts and enhances the bottom end experience. In general, the sound profile is not bass heavy.

The stereo separation from the two drivers is difficult to notice given how close the speakers are together.

But the good news is that you can pair two Bang SE devices together for a much more impactful stereo experience.

There are three different lighting modes to choose from, and you can leave the lights off if you’d prefer which will increase your battery life.

Battery stamina depends very much on the volume and the use of the light show – but the firm claims you can get up to 24 hours from a single charge.

Recharging is relatively slow. It takes close to five hours.

Controls are easy to access using the physical buttons built into a rubber panel on the top of the speaker.

There is a built-in microphone which means the Bang SE can be used as a speakerphone for calls, and there’s support for voice assistants as well.

Features such as these are nice to have and not always included on budget speakers.

Bluetooth connectivity is the latest 5.3 and the speaker is rated IPX6 for water resistance. The X, incidentally, means it was not tested for dust resistance.

Verdict

Tronsmart Bang SE is a lightweight portable speaker that’s easy to recommend to anyone looking for a pumping bright and breezy party sound at a reasonable cost.

You can't really go wrong at this price.

Pricing

Tronsmart Bang SE costs £69.99 on Amazon.
