Publisher Devolver Digital and developer Bithell Games announce their new title Tron: Catalyst. The game features Metroidvania gameplay combined with isometric action.
The game is set in the Tron universe and is coming to console and PC sometime next year. For the former, it will specifically be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Tron: Catalyst Release Window
Tron: Catalyst said to build on the story of the Arq Grid. This was originally introduced in Tron: Identity. This was the developer's so-called "visual novel adventure."
The official description for the video game introduces Exo. This is a highly resilient and resourceful program that has the ability to initiate time loops.
It adds that using this amazing power, Exo will take on the overlords of a Grid that is crumbling. All of this while evading the malevolent agent of CORE, Conn.
Controlling Exo, players must gain control over her mysterious abilities and find out the truth behind the unexplained "Glitch" that threatens the Grid, according to the Video Games Chronicle.
The developers said that as Exo, you will have to battle on-foot and on your Light Cycle. You are tasked with completing missions to gain key insights that will become useful along your journey.
Exo will also need to navigate warring factions in order to unlock new paths and discover the secrets of the Arq Grid.
Prior to the announcement of Tron: Catalyst, developer Bithell Games revealed that it was actually working on more Tron video games to coincide with Tron: Identity's release in April of last year.
Building the Tron Universe
Bithell Games started out as a one-man studio and was able to release its debut puzzler Thomas Was Alone in this situation. The game later became a well-received title within the video game industry, IGN said.
After more than a decade since, the studio has continued to grow and experiment with various projects. It has tackled different genres, including stealth, strategy, point-and-click adventure, and visual novels.
It also released a short 30-minute demo for Tron: Catalyst that gave some players a chance to see what the game has in store ahead of its official release. Its 3D isometric viewpoint reminds players of Hades and it features thick and fast action sequences.
On top of this, Exo will also have to take part in identity disk battles. While the developers have not given any information about potential RPG mechanics, the game seems to feature them to a degree, according to Men's Journal.
