NBA player Tristan Thompson has recently filed a petition to become the sole legal guardian of his 17-year-old brother, Amari. Thompson, 32, expressed concerns about their father's absence and lack of financial support, leading him to request legal authority over Amari's well-being.
Thompson's petition, filed earlier this month, explains that their father, Trevor Thompson, has been uninvolved in their lives since their mother, Andrea, took on the role of Amari's sole legal guardian in 2014. Despite a court order for child support, Trevor has failed to fulfill his responsibilities or maintain contact with Amari and Andrea.
This recent request follows Tristan's previous appointment as Amari's temporary guardian in September 2023, after their mother sadly passed away from a heart attack. Amari, who suffers from epilepsy, requires dedicated care and attention, which Tristan has been providing since relocating him from Canada to Los Angeles.
Tristan's court documents highlight that he has had minimal contact with Trevor since their parents' separation, with the exception of a brief interaction at their mother's funeral. Efforts to locate Trevor have proven unsuccessful, leaving Tristan uncertain about his whereabouts or current situation.
In addition to requesting sole legal guardianship, Tristan also wishes to assume responsibility for managing Amari's finances and healthcare decisions. He emphasizes that if Amari were to be sent back to Canada, where they have no relatives who can adequately support him, his level of care and support would be compromised.
Tristan's main objective is to ensure Amari's continued happiness and fulfillment, providing him with the best possible care. He has expressed concerns that without his legal authority and support, Amari's well-being would be compromised.
It's important to note that just prior to the recent court filing, Tristan made headlines for receiving a 25-game suspension without pay due to a violation of the NBA's anti-drug program. The league confirmed that he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, specifically Ibutamoren and SARM LGD-4033, on January 23.
Tristan has yet to publicly address his suspension from the Cleveland Cavaliers, focusing instead on his role as a caregiver and guardian to his younger brother.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Tristan remains committed to securing a stable and nurturing environment for Amari, ensuring that he receives the necessary care and support to thrive in life.
