Triple jumper completely butchers attempt and lands on back at European Championships

There was a light-hearted moment in the men's triple jump final at the European Athletics Championships when Sweden's Jesper Hellstrom landed flat on his back in the sand.

In his second attempt Hellstrom, 27, appeared to land off his balance on his 'step', and ended up diving head first towards the pit. He was in control of his own landing though, turning in mid-air and ending up looking up towards the stars.

To his credit, Hellstrom saw the funny side of his mishap, laughing away to himself as he walked off. And in the stands, even his coach afforded himself a wry smile as spectators looked on with bemusement.

Footage of the incident was posted on Twitter by BBC Sport along with a laughing emoji and the line: "When triple jump doesn't go to plan..." Sure enough, athletics fans also saw the funny side.

"So great that he is smiling [as well as his coach] about it… sometimes you just got to laugh!" replied @nanette_kincaid, while @1ballwalsh was one of many to make a football analogy: "When Salah runs towards the penalty area."

@sportsthematter added: "Man United’s transfer window in one video," while @jordantyrer92 wrote: "To be honest I want to see more of this... The Triple Flop."

To Hellstrom's credit, his mishap didn't appear to effect his concentration. He also produced a season's best of 16.23 metres, more than a metre behind gold medal winner Pedro Pichardo from Portugal, to finish 10th overall.

Hellstrom later told reporters that once he realised he'd messed up his approach he decided to entertain the fans instead. And he also declared he was satisfied with his overall display in Germany.

However, it could be said that his hilarious attempt wasn't even the most bizarre occurrence at the Championships this week. German decathlete Arthur Abele ran the 110m hurdles on his own after being booted out for a false start.
