Triple J Was Allegedly Used To Coordinate Prison Attack On Organised Crime Boss Bassam Hamzy

ABC’s Triple J has allegedly been used to coordinate an attack on organised crime boss Bassam Hamzy in Gouldburn Supermax Jail.

According to NSW Police, a major crime figure known only as “AA” due to ongoing legal matters, allegedly used the chat function on Triple J’s Unearthed app to send coded messages ordering the assault. The alleged recipient is Lofu Namulauulu, a fellow inmate at the same prison.

It’s claimed the prison-issued iPads, intended for accessing media outlets like the ABC, became an unexpected tool in this alleged criminal communication. NSW Police stated, “We will allege in court the older man used an FM Radio website chat function to communicate his instructions to coordinate the stabbing, which the younger man carried out for money,” per The Daily Telegraph.

It was reported that the attack in February saw Hamzy punched in the head and momentarily knocked unconscious in the exercise yard at Goulburn Supermax.

At the time, The Daily Telegraph reported on sources who suggested that Namulauulu and Hamzy were led into the yard, with Namulauulu allegedly lunging at the Brothers 4 Life gang founder after having his handcuffs removed first.

This isn’t Hamzy’s first rodeo when it comes to prison dust-ups. The gang founder has been behind bars for decades, with a history of violent encounters including a notable 2018 brawl with Talal Alameddine in the same Supermax exercise yard.

Bassam Hamzy is the founder of the Brothers 4 Life gang, has been behind bars since 2001 and is currently serving a 40-year sentence. He was initially imprisoned for a deadly shooting on Oxford Street in Sydney.

Hamzy’s notoriety extends far beyond his initial crime, as he has continued to be a significant figure in Australia’s criminal underworld even from behind bars.

While incarcerated, Hamzy founded the Brothers 4 Life gang, which became active in Sydney’s south-western suburbs. The gang gained public attention due to internal disputes and violent conflicts, particularly with the Alameddine crime network since 2016.

NSW Police’s Raptor Squad arrested both “AA” and Namulauulu on Tuesday as part of their investigations. Corrective Services NSW is cooperating with the investigation, though they’ve been careful not to comment further while the matter is before the courts.

Both men have been remanded in custody, with court appearances scheduled for early 2025.
