TripAdvisor's top Edinburgh bakeries offering fresh bread and pastry treats

Edinburgh is a perfect place for foodies with thousands of restaurants and cafes to visit and vibrant street food markets to pop in to. But top quality bakeries are not talked about that much - and it's a shame to neglect those capital's sweet gourmet spots.

Here's the list of the top four Edinburgh bakeries where you can get delicious fresh bread and pastries to indulge yourself.

Casa Amiga Leith

A fantastic Portuguese cafe offering some well-known classics as well as traditional southern European treats, Casa Amiga Leith is in the top ten places for a dessert in Edinburgh and is definitely worth a visit.

Alongside the exceptional baked goods - which is what the cafe is popular for, of course - the place is praised for its chilled atmosphere and friendly staff, making it a delightful weekend destination.

Mike said on TripAdvisor: "The baked goods here are excellent - not just the signature pastel de nata - but the savoury goods too. The chorizo roll was stuffed with tasty, spicy meat in delicious bread and was ridiculously cheap too.

"Service is swift and polite, and the staff are relaxed and happy to chat. Overall the atmosphere here is of a much-loved local place to either enjoy a quick pitstop or to linger a little with friends. Cafe Amiga's casual, welcoming feel is by far one of its best assets."

The Piemaker

If you are a fan of traditional British pies, this Edinburgh Old Town place is your go-to. Offering a range of pies - including vegetarian options - this bakery is perfect for a quick meal stop while browsing through the capital's beautiful city centre.

One vegetarian user on TripAdvisor said: "We just wanted a snack and bought pies from here. I should say I'm not usually a pie person as I don't eat meat, so they tend to be soya or boring offerings, but not here.

"I had a spicy cauliflower and potato pie, and it was the best pie I've ever had - delicious with plenty of filling and nicely seasoned and spiced. My husband, who loves pie, had a haggis pie, which he really enjoyed.

"If all pie shops were like this, I would be a pie person more often."

Greek Artisan Pastries

Greek bakers are gurus in the pastry-making world, with their skills being well-acknowledged and praised. And while their baked goods might be quite far away from what we're used to, they're undoubtedly the ones worth trying.

Greek Artisan Pastries was unanimously granted locals' approval, scoring top stars for food, service, and value for money.

Here you can buy frozen goods to enjoy them later fresh from the oven at home, which is a very convenient arrangement for busy people often having no time for a proper hot meal.

Here's what a TripAdvisor user said about the place: " I am happy I can still get my Greek Artisan Pastries fix at the nearby Portobello bakery. Everything is delicious, and the portions are huge! The coffee is also excellent.

"What a warm welcome from the lovely young lady working that day, from providing water for our dog and the offer to write us a recipe. The long queue outside on Tuesday afternoon says it all."

Sugar Daddy's Bakery

The Sugar Daddy's Bakery is the answer to sweet-toothed people with pretty much any intolerance, offering dairy-free, egg-free, vegan, soy-free and nut-free pastries.

Naming the place "Gluten-free heaven", Kate said on TripAdvisor: "Everything was incredible - the pizza scones are probably the nicest gluten-free I've ever eaten, and I wish I bought more! The cookies were delicious, and the bread used for the toasties was the nicest gluten-free bread I've had in a long time."
