Three people have been rescued 12 hours after their yacht was knocked over in rough seas off the coast of Victoria.

The incident unfolded 31km southwest of Mallacoota in the state's far east at 2am on Wednesday.

The 20m ketch was knocked over by large waves and disabled with the engine inoperative, according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

"Weather conditions in the area are extreme, with 3.5m seas and up to 30km/h winds," a statement from AMSA said.

Victoria Police were alerted about 3am and Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics were called to Wingan Point about 3.30am.

The rescue was undertaken using a combination of vessels from Victoria Water Police, the Mallacoota Coastguard and a commercial barge about 2.30pm.

One crew member, a man in his 70s, received lower body injuries and was flown to Latrobe Regional Hospital in a stable condition.
