The student who died following an incident in the library of Trinity College Dublin on Wednesday night has been named as Mark Melnychuk.

The incident happened at around 8.50pm and Mr Melnychuk was pronounced dead at the scene following the arrival of emergency services.

Gardai say they "are investigating all the circumstances surrounding his death."

Investigators are working to establish the full details of what happened but they believe there was no suspicious element to the incident which led to the young man's death.

"We appreciate that Mark’s death is a shock and that it will take time for those who knew him to come to terms with this sad news," the email to staff and students read.

“Please remember that there are people in Trinity offering to support you.

“You will find a list of useful contact numbers at the end of this e-mail. In particular, the Student Counselling Service has indicated that they will receive both individual students and small groups on request at this time.”

A class meeting to remember Mr Melnychuk and "reflect on his life" and time at Trinity will be held in St James’ Hospital at 10am on Friday, The University Times reports.

In a message on Twitter, the university also extended their support to faculty members and students.

"Our thoughts are with the entire College community today following the tragic incident in the @tcdlibrary last night," the university's official Twitter account wrote.

"We would like to remind all students and staff that supports are available to anyone who require them at this time."

As part of their inquiries, gardai will speak to anyone who may have been present at the time.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí in Pearse Street are currently at scene of an incident in the library in Trinity College, Dublin, that occurred this evening at approximately 8.50 p.m. Wednesday 23rd February, 2022.

"A male was discovered deceased and Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances surrounding his death.
